Sant Tomeu

Alaior is Menorca's third largest town, with a population of approximately 7,000. Situated 12km from Mahon, it is a charming town with narrow winding streets and white washed houses.

With the existence of Roman roads and prehistoric remains, the town has a medieval feel about it. Not surprising, as it was founded by King Jaume 11 of Mallorca.

In its ancient streets you can discover the Church of Santa Eulalia, rebuilt at the end of the 17th Century in a Baroque style. Another 17th Century Church, San Diego, once a Franciscan convent, has ancient cloisters which have been converted into modern villas set around a courtyard. This is known as the "Pati de sa Lluna" - the moon courtyard - and in summer features workshops, concerts and folk dancing.

Alaior is also an industrial centre for footware and more especially Mahon cheese. Made at the Coinga factory, its prestige has been recognised both in the mainland and abroad. Cheese can be bought from the factory shop - mature, semi-mature, or mild. All except the mild travel well but "first timers" are advised to try the semi-mature (suave) as the more mature are perhaps an aquired taste!

Properties to rent in Sant Tomeu

We currently have on offer a delightful, individually designed and substantial 3 bedroom detached villa with private pool on its own huge plot of land of almost five acres. It is one of a small number of properties that make up the exclusive gated and private country estate of Sant Tomeu, where each property enjoys its own very large and secluded plot set in beautiful rolling wooded countryside, and whose elevated location affords wonderful views across the countryside and, from certain aspects, to the sea in the distance.
